Curriculum structure

In the final two years, our Upper Secondary International School offers the IB Diploma Programme, in continuity with the Cambridge ICE pathway. Students may choose among three areas of study: Linguistic, Scientific, or Humanistic.

Each student builds an individualized curriculum by selecting one subject from each of the five official IB subject groups:

  • Group 1 – Language and Literature: English and/or Italian as a first language (other Language A courses available upon request)
  • Group 2 – Language Acquisition: English or Italian / Spanish or French
  • Group 3 – Individuals and Societies: History, Philosophy, or Economics
  • Group 4 – Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Environmental Systems and Societies
  • Group 5 – Mathematics: Mathematics AA or Mathematics AI

Students also select a sixth optional subject to further personalize their pathway:

  • Linguistic track: a third language (Spanish or French – Group 2)
  • Humanistic track: a second Group 3 subject
  • Scientific track: a second Group 4 subject

Each subject can be studied at two levels: Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL). At least three subjects must be taken at the Higher Level.

IB Diploma Core

At the heart of the programme lies the IB Diploma Core, a distinctive element that promotes intellectual, personal, and social growth. It includes:

  • T.O.K. (Theory of Knowledge): critical reflection on the nature of knowledge

  • C.A.S. (Creativity, Activity, Service): practical, creative, and service-based experiences

  • Extended Essay: an in-depth individual research project on a topic chosen by the student

Qualification awarded

The diploma obtained is an internationally recognized secondary school qualification, equivalent to the Italian “Maturità,” with a focus in either Linguistic or Scientific studies, depending on the student’s chosen curriculum.

The IB Programme develops both knowledge and the ability to apply it accurately, creatively, and effectively, in English and in other languages.

For this reason, the International Baccalaureate Diploma is highly valued by leading universities worldwide.
The Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) officially recognizes the IB Diploma as equivalent to the Italian high school diploma, granting full access to universities in Italy as well as abroad.
