Bees, beehives and honey: the Year 5 class explores spring at Villa Ala

Every spring has its own tradition. For the children in their final year at Vittoria Junior Nursery School, this means setting off for the Villa Ala Farm, nestled in the hills of Rivalba, for a whole day devoted to the world of bees.

The day began with an introduction to the beekeeper: who they are, what they do, and what tools they use. An ancient craft, explained in terms that children can easily understand.

This was followed by an introduction to the world of bees: how to tell them apart, how they communicate, and, above all, why they are so important for the balance of the environment.

This was followed by a visit to the educational beehive — a life-size model — where the children were able to identify the queen, the drones and the larvae for themselves.

The tour of the honey extraction workshop brought the visit to a close. We saw first-hand how honey is made, from the bees’ tireless work right through to the finished product,

To round off the day, there’s a painting workshop with a beehive theme: creativity, colours and a souvenir to take home.
