The destination was Lake Alice Superiore, in Val Chiusella, where the students took water samples from the lake. With their notebooks, cameras and equipment to hand, they collected data directly on site, in a natural setting very different from the classroom.

From the lake to the laboratory: the 1IB Collaborative Science Project
The students of 1IB spent a day on a field trip as part of the Collaborative Science Project, the interdisciplinary activity required by the syllabus for all science subjects in the Diploma Programme and necessary for the award of the IB Diploma.
After collecting the water samples, the students assessed the quality of the environment in three areas:
- chemical – water analysis
- biological – which species are observed in the laboratory and whether the most sensitive ones are also present
- environmental – the state of the ecosystem, measuring the extent of human influence
A team effort in which different scientific disciplines come together to tackle a single real-world case study.
