Preschool: discovering trades and autumn 🔨🍂

This year, the nursery school has a theme that will run through the children’s year until June: ‘When I grow up… discovering different jobs’. The world of work provides the backdrop against which we link classroom life to exploring the real world, through symbolic play, hands-on activities, storytelling and introductory workshop experiences.

Every activity includes Italian and English, music, civic education and sustainability.

Ancient trades

For Grandparents’ Day we went back in time with the cobbler workshop, open to 4- and 5-year-olds together: the older children acted as guides, while the younger ones learned from them. They discovered how shoes are made and repaired, handling different materials.

The grape harvest

The 3- and 4-year-olds became winegrowers: they observed the grape bunches, separated the grapes from the stems and pressed them, discovering the scent of the must and how grapes turn into juice.

Autumn

At the same time, October is the month of autumn: leaves, colours and changing weather explored through sensory activities, also in English.

Emotions

After reading A Jar of Emotions by Deborah Marcero, the school’s “emotions doctor” met the children: all emotions are equally valid and should be experienced without shame. The children shared their own experiences and acted them out through role-play.
