Vittoria Cup Spelling Bee: words have a champion

This Monday, the auditorium at Vittoria Junior International School was transformed into a literary arena. The secondary school classes competed in the Vittoria Cup – Spelling Bee Competition, the annual event that tests concentration, memory and command of the English language.

Starting with the Opening round, featuring words such as ‘attorney’, ‘jeopardy’ and ‘antonyms’, the difficulty level rose rapidly in the Intermediate round — ‘incandescent’, ‘animatronics’, ‘benevolent’ — right up to the terms in the final challenge: ‘perpendicularity’, ‘dendrochronology’ and ‘retinitis pigmentosa’. It was a progression that kept the audience on the edge of their seats right up to the very last word.

Their classmates played their part: posters, banners and enthusiastic cheering turned the competition into a real team celebration.

The clear winner was Greta B., who claimed the title of overall champion in this year’s competition, beating off fierce challengers and demonstrating exceptional skill.
