hackher_: when technology meets gender equality

Designing an app in a single day, working in teams with girls from other schools, whilst tackling issues such as gender roles and the gender pay gap. This is what our students experienced at hackher_, the hackathon dedicated to young women and STEM that took place in Turin in May.

Students from the Liceo Europeo Vittoria and the Vittoria International School took part, from classes 1IB, 3B, 3ACD, 4B, 4ACD and 5CD. A morning of intense work, with mixed teams tasked with turning an idea into a digital prototype, and an afternoon dedicated to a panel discussion on the gender gap and gender stereotypes in the world of work and technology.

Of the many projects submitted, the one that won over the jury was the one by the team comprising Jiaxi Jessi H. (1IB), Alexandra F. (4B) and Margherita D. (4D): a fashion app that allows users to personalise their wardrobe using artificial intelligence and colour analysis.

hackher_ was founded with the aim of encouraging girls to take an interest in STEM subjects and breaking down the barriers that still limit their representation in the tech sector today. Judging by the projects currently underway, this mission appears to be fully on track.
